Understanding Eye Health

Knowledge Is the First Step to Sight

Cataracts and glaucoma are among the leading causes of vision loss, but early detection and timely treatment can help protect sight. Learning about eye health is the first step toward prevention.

👁️

What Is a Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens that can cause blurry or reduced vision. Cataracts are common with ageing and can often be treated effectively with surgery.

🔬

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss. It may develop without noticeable early symptoms, making regular eye examinations important.

🩺

Why Early Screening Matters

Many eye conditions may develop without early warning signs. Regular comprehensive eye examinations can help detect problems early, support timely care, and help protect vision.

💊

Treatment Options

Cataracts can often be treated effectively with surgery when they significantly affect vision. Glaucoma treatment may include prescribed eye drops, laser treatment, or surgery, depending on the individual’s condition.

🛡️

Prevention & Protection

Regular eye examinations, protecting your eyes from excessive UV exposure, managing health conditions, and avoiding smoking can support long-term eye health. Early detection is an important part of protecting vision.

🤝

Community Role

Families and communities play an important role in promoting eye health. Encouraging loved ones to have regular eye examinations and supporting people to seek timely care can help protect sight.

Community Voices

Building Healthier Communities Through Awareness

The Founder's Story

Born from Experience,
Fueled by Purpose

The journey of Say No To Cataract & Glaucoma Foundation is deeply personal to our Founder, Rosemary Akua Simpson. Her grandfather lived the last 40 years of his life completely blind, an experience that showed her the profound impact vision loss can have on individuals and families.

Her mother has also been diagnosed with glaucoma and now has only a small amount of vision remaining. Watching her mother navigate life with limited sight has further strengthened Rosemary’s commitment to eye-health awareness, early detection, and access to appropriate eye care.

These experiences inspired Rosemary to establish Say No To Cataract & Glaucoma Foundation with a vision to raise awareness about cataracts and glaucoma, encourage regular eye examinations and early detection, and advocate for accessible eye care.

“I cannot change my grandfather’s story. But I can help change someone else’s.”

Today, the Foundation is committed to helping individuals and communities understand the importance of protecting their sight and seeking timely eye care.

Meet the Founder

Rosemary Akua Simpson
Founder & Executive Director

Rosemary Akua Simpson is a dedicated HR and Finance professional, Leadership & Growth Coach, and the visionary founder of Say No To Cataract & Glaucoma Foundation. Her leadership is driven by personal experience, deep compassion, and an unwavering commitment to eye-health advocacy across Ghana.

“I cannot change my grandfather’s story. But I can help change someone else’s.”

Rosemary’s journey began with a deeply personal motivation: her grandfather lived the last 40 years of his life completely blind, while her mother has been diagnosed with glaucoma and now retains only limited vision. Witnessing the profound impact that preventable vision loss has on families ignited in Rosemary a powerful purpose — to ensure no one else endures the same isolation and hardship.

With a strong background in human resources, finance, and coaching, Rosemary brings strategic leadership, organisational expertise, and heartfelt empathy to every initiative the Foundation undertakes. She established Say No To Cataract & Glaucoma Foundation to raise awareness about cataracts and glaucoma, encourage regular eye examinations and early detection, and advocate for accessible, quality eye care for communities across Ghana.

Under her guidance, the Foundation has grown into a trusted voice in community eye-health education, outreach programmes, and partnerships that bring free screenings, practical information, and hope to those who need it most.
